Drum Solo

Last week, when I played at Chelsea's with the Nuevo Hippie Cover Band, it came time for the drum solo. That's usually the time when I sit back and relax. I've even been known to sneak off stage to use the bathroom. Well, this time I happened to have my camera sitting next to my amp. So I took a couple snapshots of Chris DeJohn during his drum solo.

A few moments later, John Allen (a former member of the NHCB and one of my favorite guys), came up to the stage to berate me on taking a picture of my own band while on stage. He's right! That's worse than wearing the shirt of the band I'm going to see. That's worse than wearing the shirt of the band I'm playing in. That's worse than self-indulgent bass solos. I think the word I'm looking for is onanistic. I quickly put my camera away.

A picture taken with the flash on freezes the drummer and unflatteringly highlights his concentration-strained jowls. It looks likes he's resting, when he's in fact in the midst of some amazingly syncopated parradiddle. One day I'll learn how to use this camera, but I guess rule #1 is to not take pics of my own band while playing.
