Harvey Rabbit

Once again, I have proof that I have a tough job. Yesterday, I had to sit and watch a puppet show.

The Harvey Rabbit and Friends Show is performed by Tim and Laura Allured, who hail from Lafayette. They are a frantic and frenetic group, with a lot of visual gags and slapstick. It's like a variety show: part puppet show with appearances by Harvey Rabbit, Cecil the Orangutan, and T-Boy the Alligator, and part magic show, with plenty of music and dancing in between and costume changes a-plenty.

Tim plays the straight man to Laura and Harvey's zaniness. I wondered if when Tim was young, did he think he would grow up to be the straight man to a smart-alec rabbit?

Here's a little sample of Laura's zaniness.

For me the highlight of the show was a magic skit where Tim, dressed as a dork complete with taped-up glasses and propellor hat, goes to pull a rabbit out of a hat. Instead he pulls out a skunk, one of those ones you hold in your arm and looks like it's alive. Its head darts back and forth. The skunk runs up his shirt. Then suddenly it leaps into the audience. You would think someone had yelled fire. The kids scattered. I thought we were going to have a stampede on our hands. Then Laura picks it up and she throws it to an adult (which is usually supposed to calm everybody down) but instead the adult runs down the aisle, hands in the air, screaming. Another lady had a kid in her lap and she throws the child off her lap and takes off too. So much for adults being the reasonable ones.

Anyway, I took a lot of pictures, but my lighting was bad and I'm a lousy shot to boot.

Here's Harvey greeting his fans after the show.

And here's a little girl giving Harvey a big hug. This might be my favorite snapshot ever, even if it is a little out of focus.

I'm trying to find a way to contact Tim & Laura Allured to come to my school with the Harvey Rabbit show. If you have a phone number or address, please send it to me.

Thanks!

Tim and Laura Allured and, of course, Harvey can be reached at 1-888-722-2480. You will be able to leave a message should Harvey be busy cutting up with Ms. Laura!

I have had the pleasure of working with Tim and Laura for more years than I can remember at the St. Bernard Parish Library. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, I was able to brag that other libraries had to get in line behind us to schedule Harvey's visits to their libraries. Laura and Tim feel like family. They are such fantastic people. I wish I had just a smidgeon of Laura's energy and Tim's calm. They are always professional, enthusiastic, and just plain fun!

I would give anything to be able to watch Harvey and see Laura and Tim at what used to be my library this summer. If anyone--young or not so young--has the opportunity to see this amazing group, please do not miss it. They are awesome!
