| Music, media, libraries and my tortuous ascent into the middle class. |
My good friend Damen has a nice home studio going. I thought it would be called Threadshaped Studios or even Treadshaped Studios East. But he says he has forgone his former moniker and bequeathed it to his wife's sewing projects. His new name is Five Creepy Sheep and so the studio is Five Creepy Sheep Studio.
He kindly let me record some songs there yesterday.
I noticed that I was forgetting some songs that I've written. So I wanted to get them down for posterity's sake and to have something to post on my website.
So we recorded over 15 songs with just me and an acoustic guitar. I found out that my acoustic guitar has some buzzes and rattles in it, but luckily there was another acoustic just lying around that I could borrow.
We spent about three hours recording. Most songs I was able to knock out in one or two takes. The one that gave me the most trouble, suprisingly enough, was Barefoot Wonder, which is one of the easiest and oldest songs I've got. I think subconsciously I didn't want to record it. Actually, I consciously didn't want to record it; I'm sick of it. But I figure some people would like to have an mp3 of it. It also has an extra verse in it now.
After recording some of the tunes, Damen would crack up laughing. Luckily he would wait until after the recording. It's a good thing I brought some depressing songs.
We recorded a lot of tracks so it's going to take Threadshaped, er, I mean Damen, some time to mix and master the recordings. When they are ready I'll post the mp3s on my main music site: Mike Waugh Brand Music and I'll periodically post them on this here Waughblog.
In the meantime, you'll have to settle for some pictures. Click on the pics for a larger view.
I was going to post a picture of the outside of the studio, but on second thought, I didn't want any nogoodniks to know where it is. Quaint is a good adjective for it.
Here I am in recording position. This picture actually reminds me of a little paranoi that I have. When I'm playing live with the hippie band, periodically someone will come up to to the stage and yell something at me. I don't read lips so I have no idea what it is, but I could swear that they are telling me to smile or admonishing me because I'm not smiling. So I wonder if I look too serious sometimes.
Damen took this picture of me, but he didn't want to get the wall-unit air conditioner in it. I cropped it out. We had to record with the AC off, so it started to warm up toward the end of the session.
Here's the sound wizard at his station. I think this picture brings out the mad scientist in him.
The place on the computer screen where the flash is reflected is the recording clock that shows you how long each track is. Most of the time when I was recording, I was looking at that clock. Well, at least when I wasn't looking at my hands. I had a little problem with moving my head around too much. I also figured out that I unintentionally click my tongue or smack my lips when I sing.
Check back later for the sound clips.
