Almost Librarian No More

I was officially crowned a librarian today. I am now the Youth and Children's Services Librarian at the River Center Branch Library, which is the same library at which I currently work.

I'm a little apprehensive about being a Children's Librarian. I will have to read stories to groups of kids. Everybody tells me I shouldn't be nervous about it since I play music in front of people all the time. I guess they won't throw tomatoes at me; we'll have to see how it goes.

A couple summers ago I sang some songs and played some guitar for a children's summer program. I was very nervous, but it went pretty well. The children were singing along with me to "You Are My Sunshine" when I asked them to see how quietly they could sing. It was the most angelic sound ever. It gave me goose-bumps. But then I made the tragic mistake of asking them how loudly they could sing. They almost tore the roof off the place. My ears are still ringing. So I mark that off (loud singing) in my list of things not to do with large groups of children.

Now you will notice a change in my description in the sidebar. I'll no longer call myself an "almost" librarian. I'll simply be a librarian.

And with the extra pay, I can now afford to get guacamole in my burritos.

A little true advice from Momee. Treat them like they really are, little people. Don't try and go down to their level, bring them up to yours. Don't treat them like idiots. Most, are not stupid. They just haven't learn very much yet. Help them to learn.

Now that you are a real librarian, and saving lives, maybe you can be an action hero.

A librarian blog you might find some library humor libetiquette.blogspot.com.

Congrats!! Although you have no interest in having your own children, this is a wonderful opporunity for you. Think of it as a growing experience where you and the children will benefit. Children are our future and you have the potential to encourage and excite these young minds. Use your natural talents to turn them on to music and reading. Children understand more than you think, they just don't have the know how to communicate it to us(or we just don't listen). Just think of where you are today because of the influences in your life. You could have turned out completely different if someone didn't turn you on to music. I am proud of you and I look forward to hearing about your adventures as a children's librarian.
