Burrito in Paradise

I'd say that about once a week, the old lady and I head down to our favorite burrito shop: Izzo's Illegal Burrito.

We're both vegetarians and so we often have a hard time finding fast food that's good. Izzo's makes a killer Veggie burrito. Here it is on the menu--only $4.75 for the regular.

I'd only recommend the Super Veggie or Illegal Burrito for those with extremely hearty appetites who need to bulk up for a few months of artic travel. However, back in the day Mrs. Waugh has been known to eat an entire Illegal Burrito, which was about equal to half her body weight.

When Izzo's opened we were practicing veganism, so it was a bit of a godsend. Lately we've fallen off the wagon and been getting cheese and sour cream.

Your veggie burrito can come with either refried beans, pinto beans, or black beans. Mrs. Waugh goes for the refried beans. I think the black beans are magical. They are boiled with cloves of garlic, and if one is lucky, chunks of boiled garlic may end up in the burrito. There's a host of other toppings, including roasted corn, marinated grilled portabellos, and fresh cilantro. You choose your favorites. Lately I've stopped getting the guacamole because they charge a $1 for two tablespoons of it. That's too bad, because it is quite good.

A side of chips and salsa is a good bet. From 4-7pm the chips and salsa are just $1. Also, there are a variety of sauces. My favorite is the hot sauce mixed with the ancho barbecue sauce. There's also a green sauce, an extremely hot one called Illegal Sauce, and a Cilantro Ranch which I tried recently on a portabello topped burrito.

The tables are these crazy swirly stainless steel things that make me cross-eyed whenever I try to focus on them. (Phone cords do the same thing to me). But with the mess I make when I eat, I feel the stainless steel is necessary.

There's usually some sports on the two TV's there or some college/hippie rock on the radio. They also have today's newspaper clipped on the wall. Sherman's Lagoon goes well with the burrito although I reckon you could also look for a job.

In the end, the burritos end up in our stomachs, and we stumble back to our car--only to return sometime the following week.
