For those of y'all who didn't know, the song that is in the trailer for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is Mr. Blue Sky by ELO (Electric Light Orchestra).
I didn't figure it out until yesterday. I had incorrectly guessed that it was a Kink's song I hadn't heard yet, because there are so many good Kink's songs that I haven't heard yet.
Apparently it was also used in the trailer for Charlie Kaufman's Adaptation, as well as in a Volkwagen commercial (and we know what that did for Nick Drake's Pink Moon).
I thought I had the Best of ELO on 8-track, but I don't remember this song being on it. I got into ELO when I heard somewhere that they wanted to be like an extension of the Beatles "I am the Walrus". But when I listened, they didn't sound anything like "I am the Walrus" especially when Xanadu came out. But I loved them nevertheless.
Whenever I DJ'd at Chelsea's, I usually got a good reaction for playing "Don't Bring Me Down" But then again, maybe I was the only one who liked it and I never noticed.
Anyway, there's already speculation concerning a new Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze collaboration. A horror film?
P.S. The East Baton Rouge Parish Library does own copies of Strange Magic: The Best of Electric Light Orchestra. Mr. Blue Sky is on that CD. Check it out.
