Stepping OUT-
It's getting to where I have more fun making notecards than using them. Lately, I've been wanting to make some shorter sets, less than 40 cards seems pretty good. I got about 8 or 9 anagrams on each card.
This weekend I made a set of all 7 letter words that begin with OUT-. The impetus was a game I lost at the club where I second-guessed myself and didn't play OUTGIVE. I was distraught when I realized that it was good. I took a look at the list when I got home and noticed that the list is pretty short. It made about 27 cards. These will also be useful in challenging phoney OUT- words. I know I got away with playing OUTDEAL* in a tournament last year.
It's interesting to note the words that can take an OUT at the beginning or the ending. Here are the seven letter words that do that:
OUTREAD READOUT
OUTSELL SELLOUT
OUTTAKE TAKEOUT
OUTDROP DROPOUT
OUTWASH WASHOUT
OUTTURN TURNOUT
OUTROLL ROLLOUT
OUTFALL FALLOUT
OUTBURN BURNOUT
OUTWALK WALKOUT
OUTWORK WORKOUT
OUTBACK BACKOUT
OUTLOOK LOOKOUT
OUTPULL PULLOUT
OUTCOOK COOKOUT
Hey Mike (Quetzal),
My name is Randy and I've been playing recreational scrabble for years, but ever since I found out about ISC (rated around 850) I've been playing more and more games. With more frequently play, I've considered making the effort to start studying word lists eventually make a jump to tournament play. I get the impression that you were recently in a similar situation as me, so I was wondering you had any insight or advice for an aspiring player. Anyway, I always appreciate reading a good scrabble story. Keep up the good work! :)
